Discover the Underwater Wonders of Florida
with Academy of Scuba
Southern Florida is home to the third largest living coral barrier reef in the world, the others being off the coasts of Australia and Belize. Key Largo is located in the middle of this reef system and in part of the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary. This lush reef ecosystem houses hundreds of coral species and thousands of fish species harmoniously within five miles of shore. Water temperatures range from the mid 70s-80s year round, average visibility is between 50-100+ ft, and depths are between 20-140 ft making these reefs great training and fun diving for all experience levels. Additionally, a mix of Spanish explorer ships and modern cargo and military ships are scattered along the coast offering a great secondary reef system of both natural and artificial wrecks. Critters that frequent the area include: eels, sea turtles, groupers, dolphins, sharks, whale sharks, barracudas, angelfish, huge schools of bait fish, blue fin, mackerel, and the list goes on.
